King Square, IslingtonPTE worked with the residents at King Square for several years during the regeneration of their estate and have since visited the estate regularly, it being only 100m from our home at Diespeker Wharf.
The residents in both existing and new homes are active and community minded and Islington Council supported our proposal to engage with the residents as the second Case Study in the HHP to test the practical application of the Happy Homes Toolkit during the summer of 2024. The research team designed a series of questions linked to the main themes of the Framework and the relevant design attributes of the social value archetypes (spaces, elements, and details), and leaflets were hand delivered, posters put up in foyers and the community centre and on the digital noticeboards to attract interest. Through a series of interviews and focus groups, residents tested and scored the questions providing feedback to the research team. The questionnaires were adapted with this feedback and re-tested with three versions of three pilot questionnaires including an online version. This collaborative process developed the ‘resident assessment workbook’. The development of the workbook has been crucial in shaping the questions to focus on the most relevant aspects of social value embodied in the home, building and immediate context, not only from a design perspective, but also prioritising what is important to residents from their scoring and feedback. |
